A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that occurs when the brain is shaken or jostled inside the skull. Concussions can be caused by a blow to the head, a fall, or a car accident. Symptoms of a concussion can include headache, nausea, dizziness, confusion, memory loss, and sensitivity to light and noise.
Some common physiotherapy interventions for concussion include:
- Vestibular rehabilitation: exercises that help to improve balance and coordination, and reduce dizziness and vertigo.
- Cervical spine (neck) rehabilitation: exercises to improve neck strength, range of motion, and stability.
- Cranial sacral therapy: gentle manual therapy that can help to reduce headaches and improve brain function.
- Therapeutic exercises: exercises that help to improve overall strength, endurance, and flexibility.
- Education: teaching patients how to manage symptoms, prevent future injuries, and how to safely return to normal activities.
It’s important to be evaluated and treated by a healthcare professional as soon as possible after a head injury, as early intervention can improve outcomes and help to prevent long-term complications.
At PhysioZone has trained physiotherapists to complete an Immediate Post Concussive Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT). A thorough cortical, vestibular, and visual assessment will be completed for the concussion and post-concussion syndromes. Our therapist will work closely with the patient’s healthcare team, including the patient’s physician, to determine the best course of treatment and design a safe and effective treatment plan.
At Physiozone our therapist will work with the patient to develop an individualized treatment plan that addresses the specific symptoms and needs of the patient.
